Clean Up Sunday

Organisers of Bromyard’s recent ‘Clean Up Sunday’ were overwhelmed by the response from the community.  Despite a fairly steady drizzle all morning on 16th November more than 100 people turned up to help rid Bromyard of rubbish, weeds and general items that had been dumped by the roadside.

The huge response ensured that much of the town and the surrounding streets could be cleared – as could be seen by the enormous amount of rubbish that was brought back at the end of the morning.  Almost eighty black sacks were taken off to be disposed of, along with a variety of items such as a suitcase, fire extinguisher, computer keyboard and kitchen ware.  It was reported back by some of the collectors that many of these items had been spoiling our lovely town for some time.

Brownies, Cubs, Scouts, officers from Bromyard Police Station, Councillors and even the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for the next election joined residents and weekend guests for a satisfying morning’s work.

It was definitely a job well done and it is hoped that this will become a regular event  - not least for the strong camaraderie that grew during the course of the morning.  Organiser Mary Seldon said, “This has been so worthwhile, we knew that there was a need here, but we didn’t realise that so much rubbish could be collected in such a short space of time.  It’s good to see the people of Bromyard out caring for their community and having some pride in their surroundings.”

Thanks must go to many people including ECHO, Herefordshire Council, Top Garage, the Falcon Hotel, Bromyard Pet and Garden, Country Wide, Pettifers and Sue Gardner – all of whom donated much that helped make this event such a success and of course the "litter pickers of Bromyard".
